Languages of Europe

Europe is a continent with 44 countries, according to the UN, and almost every country has its own language. The European Union recognizes 24 official languages, out of which English, French and German have a higher status.

Just like India, Europe as a whole is also multilingual and German is one of the most popular second languages spoken by Europeans.

Here are some maps which can help you put things in perspective. The first map consists of the official languages of the European Countries:

Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein are the 6 countries where German is the official language. Liechtenstein is a tiny country squeezed between Austria and Switzerland which is not visible on this map.

Now, here we have the map of the second most spoken second language in the EU. These are the languages spoken in the respective countries after their official language. These could be mainly the language of the immigrants of the neighboring countries.

This is an interesting map as it shows the third most spoken second language of the EU in which you can see that German dominates it all. This could be because French, German are some of the most commonly taught languages at school in the EU.

All maps belong to Jakub Marian.
