Hello and welcome to a new series of exam prep for the Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1 exam. Before you read further, please save these two videos to watch later. Both these videos offer you a full-length exam walkthrough that helps you understand how this exam works and what is tested at each exercise.
Now onto the speaking part of Start Deutsch 1!
This exam contains three exercises. Exercise one involves your basic introduction, exercise two is about asking questions and answers to your partner and the third exercise is about forming requests and responding to them when asked by your partner.
Here are some sample exercises that will help you with your exam prep!
Part 1: the introduction
Name: Ich heiße ______. / Ich bin _________. Mein Name ist ____________.
Alter: Ich bin ___ Jahre alt.
Land: Ich komme aus _______(, zwar aus _______).
Wohnort: Ich wohne in _______(, wohne in _______). [Extra: Ich wohne bei meinen Eltern. / Ich wohne allein.]
Sprachen: Ich spreche _____, ____ und ein bisschen Deutsch.
_______ ist meine Muttersprache. / Meine Muttersprache ist ________.
Beruf: Ich arbeite nicht, denn ich bin ein Schüler / Schülerin / Student / Studentin. (for school/college/university students)
Ich arbeite als __[designation]__ bei __[company]__.
Hobby: Ich ______ gern. / In meiner Freizeit ______ ich gern.
Meine Hobbys sind _____ und _______. / Mein Hobby ist _______.

After this, you will be asked to spell 1 word and tell numbers such as your receipt number, house number, and so on. This would demonstrate that you know the German Alphabet as well as the numbering system.
Part 2: questions & answers
Keep the questions very simple and relevant to the theme. Avoid open-ended or opinionated questions!
For example, the theme is ‘Essen und Trinken’ and the word is ‘Kaffee’,
Acceptable questions:
Trinkst du Kaffee? / Trinken Sie Kaffee?
Wo kann man hier Kaffee kaufen?
Wie schmeckt die der Kaffee? / Wie schmeckt Ihnen der Kaffee?
Unacceptable questions:
Was isst du abends? / Was essen Sie abends?
Warum trinkst du Kaffee? / Warum trinken Sie Kaffee?
You must also be able to answer, instead of just saying ‘Ja/Nein’
Answers to the first three questions:
Ja, Kaffee trinke ich gern. / Nein, leider trinke ich keinen Kaffee.
Man kann im Supermarkt Kaffee kaufen.
Der Kaffee schmeckt mir ziemlich gut / gut / nicht gut.
Part 3: requests and responding to the requests
Use the ‘Imperativ’ for ‘Sie’ while forming a request. If you can’t think of one, begin a question with “Könnten Sie bitte mir sagen,” and continue with your question.
You must also be able to answer, instead of just saying ‘Ja/Nein’
